Goodbye Pink Sink

…and toilet (but that wasn't as catchy of a title).  We now have a gleaming white sink, a stylish new toilet, and a sleek modern faucet.  But let's take a moment to remember the old sink and faucet.

Originally, I ordered this sink from Overstock thinking that we would never find a sink to match our old sink's dimensions and fit down into the same hole.  The plan was to block the hole from our last sink with plywood (leaving space somewhere for plumbing) and sit the new sink on top.  All would work as long as the new sink was large enough to cover the hole.

So, we used our angle grinder with a diamond cutting wheel on it to cut through the edges of the old sink. Seth operated the angle grinder while I continuously sprayed it with water.

Then, Seth used a hammer to bust it up piece by piece.

And shortly, we were free of the pink/peach sink.

As luck would have it, we were strolling around Home Depot one day and found an in stock sink that would drop down into the hole for a perfect fit.  Seth and I aren't afraid of a little challenge but when presented with a less complicated option, we are probably going to use our smarts and go the easier route. That's how we ended up returning the sink from Overstock (and losing $20 on return shipping - sad day) and installing this square drop-in sink from Home Depot.

I chose a modern, chrome faucet from Lowe's.

Definitely an improvement over the old sink and faucet.  (I won't bore you with the plumbing and drain stopper issues that we encountered during installation.)

We also purchased a new toilet.  I was back and forth between this one and this one.  The first one is a best seller that supposedly has awesome flushing power, but the sleek lines of the Kohler model ultimately won me over.  Here's a look back at the old toilet (I guess I never took a close up of it).

And here's the Kohler Cimarron.

I love the soft closing seat and lid, the modern handle, and the fact that the lid covers over the seat completely for a clean look.  I don't love that the seat and lid are plastic (doesn't anyone make anything of quality anymore?) and that the seat has a gentle inward slope that sometimes "cups" you properly and other times does not.  On a side note: Why don't they let you test out the comfort of the seat before buying toilets?  I'm not suggesting that we all drop our pants in the home improvement store, but you could still get an idea of comfort with clothes on.

Last week, we built shelves into the center of the vanity and started painting it.  We also hung our new mirror last night.  I'm amazed by how much larger the space feels with the mirror and light wall color.  That busy wallpaper was definitely closing the space in.  This week I plan to make the shower curtain and start gathering accessories.  Here is a sneak peek at some of the things that will be in the final room.

I can't wait to see how the finished project comes together!  Not much longer now...
